The Skilpad Nature Reserve or rather Wildflower Reserve has become well known for some of the best wildflower venues in Namaqualand. The reserve is 1000ha in size and located west of Kamieskroon. The wild flowers of Namaqualand attract visitors from all over the world.
There is a higher precipitation in this area, due to its proximity to the coast. This results in more moisture or mist from the coast. The perfect life for the wildflowers and succulents of Namaqualand. The mountainous Kamiesberg area east of Kamieskroon is also superb for mountain biking. The name ‘skilpad' means tortoise. The reserve is home to the world's smallest tortoise, ‘ the Namaqua speckled padloper'.
Skilpad Nature Reserve is home to the largest diversity of succulent plants in the world. You will find a great variety of insects living symbiotically with the plants. Skilpad Nature Reserve forms part of the newly proclaimed Namaqua National Park. The reserve offers self-catering units for visitors.
This is the perfect retreat for all nature lovers, hikers, birders and travellers seeking the road less travelled
